In the beginning of pregancy we will discuss the various medical ultrasounds that are possible during pregnancy at registration and during the intake. Ultrasounds are neither obligatory nor always (all) necessary. Some ultrasounds are only done on indication and for others you choose yourself, such as the 20-week ultrasound.

We offer various medical ultrasounds such as the early ultrasound and the term ultrasound.

For the 13-week ultrasound and the 20-week ultrasound, which require more specialisation, we mainly work together with Echotoon and First Look. These are skilled and small-scale ultrasound companies in Groningen. After the intake you can make an appointment there yourself. If you prefer another ultrasound centre, feel free to let us know. We can also refer you there.

Ultrasound for the due date

At the term echo, we measure your baby from the head to the tailbone (the crown/breech length). This is how we determine how far along you are and what your due date will be. This ultrasound takes place between 10 and 12 weeks, usually after your intake interview.

The ultrasound is usually done externally via the abdomen. If the image is not clear enough, an internal ultrasound through the vagina may be necessary. During the ultrasound, we explain what can be seen and immediately share the calculated due date.

The due date is a guideline; your baby is considered full-term between 37 and 42 weeks. During this period, you can give birth under the supervision of your midwife.

Growth ultrasound

In some situations, it is necessary to have a growth ultrasound. During antenatal check-ups, we keep track of the baby's growth. We do this by feeling and measuring your belly, among other things. If we think the baby is on the small or the large side, we will have one or more growth ultrasounds made just to be sure.

Positioning ultrasound

If we have doubts about the baby's position from 36 weeks onwards, this is a reason to have an ultrasound. After all, we would like the baby to be lying with the head down from 36 weeks.

13-week ultrasound

This ultrasound is designed to detect congenital, physical abnormalities early in pregnancy. As this ultrasound is still in a research phase, you must consent to participate in the study if you choose to have this ultrasound.

We will discuss this option with you during one of your first consultations. If you are interested, we will be happy to give you more information so that you can make an informed choice.

20-week ultrasound

The 20-week ultrasound is a medical ultrasound. All the baby's organs are viewed. The purpose of the ultrasound is to screen the baby for any physical abnormalities. It is therefore not a sex determination ultrasound. If you would like to know the gender, this can be checked during the ultrasound.

We will discuss this option with you during one of the first consultations. If you are interested, we will be happy to give you more information so that you can make an informed choice.
