Good preparation helps you face childbirth with more confidence. Find out about the process, go along to check-ups and, if possible, take a class on a pregnancy course. This will give you a better idea of what is involved in giving birth and you can discuss practical questions and wishes together.
Discuss your expectations and preferences beforehand. What does your partner like? What does she prefer not to do? If she is less able to express what she wants during labour, you can communicate her wishes to us or the hospital staff. Also think about possible scenarios: what if things go differently than expected? By talking about this, you will be better able to deal with unexpected situations.
Flexibility is important. Childbirth does not always go as planned. Especially if a hospital admission turns out to be necessary, it can take some switching. You play a big role in supporting your partner, both practically and emotionally. Stay involved and help her through childbirth, just as you would at home.
A few more practical tips:
- Remind your partner to drink or eat something regularly.
- Make sure she goes to the toilet every 2-3 hours; a full bladder can thwart contractions.
- A massage just above the tailbone can give relief, but check if she likes it.
- Keep track of the frequency of contractions, that way you will know exactly when it is time to call us
