The maternity week usually lasts until 10 days after the birth. We visit you several times during this period and call regularly to see how you are doing.
In this first week, you will be assisted by a maternity assistant. She takes care of you and the baby and will share much of her knowledge and experience with you. During this maternity week, the maternity nurse will do some medically necessary checks on you and the baby. She helps with (breast)feeding, teaches you how to bathe the baby, or has a supportive role in this. She often has useful tips, takes care of maternity visitors and does some household chores. She also keeps us informed of how things are going in the maternity bed, because after all, we are ultimately responsible.
As mentioned earlier, the maternity period officially lasts until 6 weeks after giving birth. But you can also contact us after those 6 weeks! For tips and tricks, it is best to contact your maternity care bureau or consultation bureau.
Everyone in the Netherlands is entitled to maternity care. Maternity care is not obligatory, but it is recommended. You pay a personal contribution for maternity care. If you have any questions about this, contact your health insurer. The advice is to apply for at least the minimum number of hours of maternity care. Some people initially feel that maternity care is not necessary. In the week after the birth you will notice that it is very nice after all!
